For those of you living under a rock, Dianna Agron wore a shirt that read “likes girls” during the 8PM performance of Born This Way in Toronto on 11th June. Tumblr went a little mad, wondering if this was her coming out or… what?
Anyway, she wrote a little novel of a blog post explaining her reasons, and this line pretty much summed it up for me:
“We can’t always put ourselves in someone else’s shoes. But we can try.”
On a slightly tangential topic - there are a bunch of tumblesbians who are now saying what she did was insensitive and/or offensive, from the few rants I skimmed through it’s something about her implying that putting on a teeshirt and pretending to be gay - did she pretend to be gay? I must have missed that - in any way compares to The Trials And Tribulations Of A Homosexual. And to these people, you’re all crazy and you need to CALM YO TITS. The point is not whether she’s gay or straight or one of the many shades of grey in between. The whole point is that your sexuality - along with your race, religion, eating habits, whatever - shouldn’t and doesn’t matter, and shouldn’t result in anyone being on the receiving end of prejudice or hatred. She is preaching acceptance. AND WHAT PRAY TELL ABOUT PREACHING ACCEPTANCE IS SO OFFENSIVE, EXACTLY?
I wasn’t always the hugest fan of Dianna Agron. Which is not to say that I wasn’t a fan; I think she’s pretty and a pretty good actress (although sometimes Quinn feels like one of the worst written characters on Glee but that’s not the point here), and have been warming even more to her with every music mix tape or photography post that graces her tumblr, but I generally ended up very, very distracted by Naya Rivera’s mind-blowing hotness.
BUT. This is officially now also a Dianna Agron appreciation space. I think what she did was brave. I love that she’s a person who deems it necessary to fight for something that may not have a direct impact on her life, and it makes me respect her that much more. It blows my mind (and not in a good way) that she now seems to be on the receiving end of some reverse prejudice. Heterophobia? Hah. Way to completely undo what she was shooting for, guys. But in the off chance that she sees this, or any of the other awesome posts that people who do words way better than I ever could hope to have written, I hope she knows that her support for the LGBT community is much appreciated, and that I for one thank her for it.
Also, she totally rocked that teeshirt. :)
